I don't understand why the Chinese didn't just say no, and exit the US market. VPN's would keep Americans connected, and the US would have taken a huge reputational hit. I have to assume China thinks it gets something from this, beyond the cash. I'm guessing they retain proprietary rights to the actual algorithms - the new owners have "operational control" which is not full ownership. Perhaps I'm looking for straws to clutch...

Those are corporate media - it just so happened that ByteDance was exploiting this purely for commerical purposes....but clearly they know it also has the effect of hollowing out people's brains, by sending them lurching from one tititalltion point to another ie, "engagement", because in China the same companie operates under a time limit for thuse fo this app by young people, because of the known mental health effects. It's a manipulative medium - and it ain't socially owned or controlled by the individuals who put content on the platform or consume it.
Moreover, these are not only corporate media, they are now state-controlled media.
There is no plausibble excuse for anyone spending even one second on these platforms when they are KNOWN to the state-controlled manipulation platforms.
The actual power of the internet lies in people using it for education and growth, which is not going to happen on the Tiktok model of operation or any other "social media".
