Thank you for reading Gavin. I usually write stuff like this when I find myself having a discussion over and over again with people either online or in person. I write these to be able to send to people as a sort of summary of my thoughts instead of having the whole conversation again.

I don’t get why people avoid the most obvious thing about whole this war. Would you want to have military bases of Russia somewhere nearby Hawaii? Well, Russia doesn’t want to have the US and NATO nearby too. That’s simple. At the same time, it is not possible to take it as a genocide too, as with all the horrors of the war, it is going slow. Russia could destroy everything in 3-7 days. Maybe even in a day. But it didn’t happen. Though there are some questions about that all the oligarchy bases in Ukraine weren’t destroyed. I’m curious about this thing. If you will find something about it and write, it would be interesting to read too. Because it also looks like incongruity to me and makes to built conspiracies. Though, as I know, Russia is targeting military bases mainly.

Russia has the same rights of territorial integrity as does the arrogant, condescending, hypocritical US. They were lied to about NATO expansion and made it very clear that they would not tolerate a NATO spy post on their border. This same country that actually used a nuclear bomb now wants to grant permission to everyone else who wants one.

It’s a thought provoking piece! A few thoughts/ disagreements:

The first question would be if the people claiming Russia is about to collapse and the people who claim Russia will conquer Europe are the same people? You don’t really cite anyone, so it’s difficult to tell.

The second thing I was wondering is whether this seeming contradiction is just rooted in a conflation between intent and capacity? Russia may want to do many things but it actually can’t. This is completely independent of Russia’s actual intentions and capabilities, I am just not sure the contradiction you identified is there to begin with.

Lastly, don’t you think that like so many militarily superior imperial powers Russia will eventually be outlasted? I know it’s become a very trendy realist position to believe Russia will slowly grind down Ukraine, but I honestly believe that within 10-20 years, there will be peace and no Russian troops will remain within the borders of Ukraine. Just like the Soviet & American occupations of Afghanistan, the Israeli occupation of South Lebanon, the French occupation of Mali, this too will pass.

Very informative. What is the addiction to this war as it sucks the European economies dry? Is it shits and giggles? Sexual? Indeed, these European boneheads know that this is a loser. Is the devotion to the MIC so intense that they would jettison their people?
